In May 1999, Merck & Co. Merck, manufacturer of VIOXX prescribed it as a safer painkiller for stomach than the commonly used ones. They also described that around 84 million people used this medication between 1999 and 2004. In a study conducted, it came to know that VIOXX had severe risk of cardiovascular conditions like heart attacks and strokes. Also in a test conducted by Merck it was discovered that patients experienced heart attacks and this result was not publicized until 2001 due to its disrepute. The FDA warned Merck for not putting forward the safety usage of VIOXX and to pull out the product from the market. In 2003, irrespective of the denials, the Merck’s profited a remarkable amount of $2.5 million.
